More squalid details of getting ready for publishing

Turning illustrations into high-resolution grayscale (see separate post), I get that. Now my Word document keeps sending my endnotes down toward the bottom of the page. I thought I told them to stay within the 3/4" margin. But no, they had to seep down and cover the page numbers. Other users had the same problem. None have found a solution, as far as I could tell. Maybe they gave up using Word for publishing. What I did was set the page numbers at 0.3" from the bottom (instead of my preferred 0.5"). Now the text doesn't cover them. It might look a little squished down there at the bottom, but at least you can see it.
